...to keep one's soul aloft" or at least that's what Gustave Flaubert thought.
What does 'keeping one's soul aloft' mean?
What does it mean to you?
It's certainly open to interpretation, just as every inspiring word or verse is. Do you allow your mind to wander and ask what it means to you? Now's your chance!
To me, keeping my soul aloft is keeping the fire in my belly stoked and sparkling - sometimes it's barely crackling with sparse embers, other times the flames are about to melt my insides. Most of the time it's somewhere in between - a nice steady roar that energizes, inspires and maintains my sanity.
To keep my inner fire burning means to have freedom and adventure in good supply. Freedom = I can be who I am, have what I want and be free of the good opinions of others. Adventure = I am on a journey to somewhere and enjoying both the process and the outcome. It could be a Sunday morning trip to the zoo with my family, a week long getaway abroad with my husband or the drive between home and the work I love.
Our souls are hungry and demand to be fed. The growl when we don't feed them the spiritual food that makes us feel whole and fulfilled can drown out the sound of almost anything else we have going on. But the growl is not always what we expect it to be, because it's not audible in the way we'd expect. Instead, it's a physical pain, an aversion to someone or something, a general sense of emptiness or a space that we just can't seem to fill with any amount of anything that we used to love.
How do you feed your soul?
I feed my soul with inspiring quotes, books and card decks. I feed my soul with present time playing with my girls. I feel my soul by writing what I'm grateful for every day. I feed my soul with yoga. I feel my soul with running. I feed my soul with a cold, bubbly Prosecco. I feed my soul with a thin cotton blanket and a cat nap. I feed my soul with all kids of music. I feed my soul with an impromptu dance party. I feed my soul by surrounding myself with big thinkers and doers. I feed my soul by being true to my purpose. I feed my soul by coaching others the keep their souls fed. I feed my soul by daydreaming.
If the principal thing in this world is to keep our souls aloft, how do you keep yours flying high?
