My husband and I recently made the decision to take a trip to Italy (sans twins) in the Fall. This is no easy task. We've never left the kids for this long before, don't have the money in our bank account currently and have to make a lot of arrangements to do this. It won't be easy, BUT why would I let that stop me? I have fresh shrimp and asparagus risotto to eat at this amazing hole-in-the-wall restaurant (that I hope I can find when I get there!) and special memories to make with my husband.
Before the girls were born, we'd go to Europe every 2-3 years for 5 or 6 days at a time. We'd typically chose basecamp city, get a hotel and fully immerse ourselves in one place with the occasional day trip. This time we've chosen Florence as our base camp because it's one of my favorite European cities, Chris has never been and I'm craving to hear 'Prego' every other word.
This, my friends, is not just a story about planning our Italian getaway, but instead a manifesto about how when you decide what you want and start taking action, the Universe shows you signs along the way that you're on track and conspires with you to make it happen.
Notice that the first step is to DECIDE. If you're not deciding to create something new and you're making excuses about how you don't need to go to Italy, then you're on autopilot and your life is like a flat Pellegrino - drinkable, but with no zing. How's that going to feel when you're looking back on your life at age 75?
My first step was to write down the intention in my gratitude journal - I'm so happy and grateful now that Chris and I vacation in Italy this Fall, enjoying the sites and sounds and amazing shrimp and asparagus risotto. Done. (By the way, did you know that writing something down makes it 42% more likely that it will happen? WRITE IT DOWN!)
A few days later, while I was cleaning out my office, I found a book from my previous trip to Italy (15 years ago : ) and tore out pictures of two hotels in Florence, one of which my dad and I had stayed in, and hung them up in my home office. These steps were the starting point to focus my mind and open the Reticular Activating System (google it!) to notice resources, people etc that align with my Italian intention.
From there, I started to play around with flights and dates and get prices. Chris looked up Hilton hotels near Florence where we could possibly use our points. This gave us an idea of how much this trip would cost us, though you never really know what cool shit can happen to change this.
Last Saturday, I made a trip to the jewelry store to replace my damaged earring backs, and while I was waiting, I noticed two beautiful pictures of Italy on their walls - one specifically of Florence. (Thank you Universe. You're really amazing!) Interestingly enough, I ended up not purchasing anything because the sales lady told me how to fix what I had. I concluded that the whole reason for the malfunctioned earring debacle and trip to the store was that I needed to see those pictures of Italy on the wall.
On Monday, I showed up for my first official day at Greenleaf for my new role as Chief Inspiration Officer (I'm kind of obsessed with my new job, which is why I tell you again) and started talking about how I want to go to Italy. Another new team member told me he had spent 10 days there last year and had a recommendation for somewhere we just HAD to go while we're there - Manarola, so we're adding that to our list. Then he proceeded to show me gorgeous pictures of Italy. Ahhhh.....Grazie
I also decided to take an important first step in making this all happen by texting my mom to see if she'd be willing to come and stay with the girls - this was a REAL determining factor folks - and she said 'yes!' (Thanks Mom - you may be the only one reading this : ) )
Finally, I had an a-ha moment around where the money could come from to at least cover the flights. Sweet! FYI Universe - I'm always open to other options here!
WhatI have learned so far is just further clarification of what I already 'know' (I tread lightly with that word because my ego LOVES it). When I know what I want, write it down, visualize it, talk about it with others, the Universe conspires with me and shows me signs that it's on the way.
This is just like planning any other trip that you KNOW you CAN take, isn't it? You decide where you want to go, do your research and planning, book it, pack your bags and hit the road.
So stretch yourself and start taking steps towards what you really, really want that is currently somewhat out of reach for you. Just watch how the Universe conspires and plays with you on your journey. It's really quite fun.
Here's a summary of the steps:
1. Decide what you want and write it down
2. Create visuals
3. Talk about it
4. Start planning as if it's going to happen
5. Watch for signs and say thank you every time you see one
6. Allow it to unfold
7. Share your manifestation with your friends and loved ones (and me too please)
What do you want to create that's a stretch for you? How will you make your life more like a bubbly Pellegrino today?
